Anna Tewes Artist’s Statement
My interest in nature,
nurture and design are expressed in each of my paper collages. I am
fascinated with symmetry and the use of repetitive shapes. I am inspired
by the wondrous wisdom in contrasts, such as water carving stone or a bud
taking shelter from the wind and gaining warmth from a stone. My collages
are both representational and fantasy with a strong use of pattern. My
favorite art movements are Art Nouveau and Japonisme.
There are so many
interesting and diverse international papers available today. I
probably have one each of them! I love paper!
The papers themselves
give me many ideas, just waiting to be interpreted. It takes lots of
paper to do what I’m doing.
I have created artwork
my whole life. I have worked in pastels, watercolor, weaving, stenciling,
printmaking, flower arranging and have also trained as a graphic artist.
My techniques include
archival pastes and Chigirie, a Japanese method of paper collage in the
creation of my collages. I sometimes combine the mediums of paste
papers, acrylics, oil pastels, or colored pencil to enhance specific
subjects.
Anna lives and works
near Corvallis Oregon. She is a board member of the Corvallis Art
Guild. Anna attends several juried art fairs throughout the west
coast yearly.
